Creamy Maca Root Smoothie
Blend this delicious creamy maca root smoothie
Tasty, and loaded with protein, healthy fats, and only takes a few minutes to make and enjoy!
Smoothies have become one of my favorite ways of getting nourishment in a way that’s fulfilling, enjoyable and convenient. Because smoothies are loaded with fruits and vegetables, they also tend to be loaded with fiber. This can help bridge the gap between our normal fiber intake & the USDA's suggested fiber intake, lowering our risks of chronic illnesses & increasing our overall health. This maca smoothie can be creamy and makes the perfect breakfast on the go, afternoon snack, or post-workout drink.
What is Maca Root?
Maca Root is a cruciferous vegetable, meaning that it’s related to broccoli, cabbage, and kale. Maca is generally consumed in a powdered form, it is a Peruvian plant grown in the Andes mountains. It is the main edible part of the plant and has a slightly earthy taste. I personally feel that maca is an acquired taste on its own and creating this recipe was the perfect combination of sweet and creamy in order to mask the flavor & reap its benefits entirely. It contains high amounts of essential minerals like copper, iron, and potassium and is a great source of fiber to keep our digestive system healthy and happy.
Frequently asked questions
What does maca taste like? With the amount of maca in this smoothie recipe, you won’t really taste it. However, maca does have a bit of an earthy taste, but the other ingredients listed truly balance it out, and taste delicious!
Are fresh or frozen fruit better for smoothies? I prefer using frozen fruit in this recipe, but you can also use fresh. If using fresh fruits, you will want to add a handful of ice so that it makes the smoothie nice and cold and it helps the texture go from milkshake to smoothie.
Does it keep? This smoothie is best served fresh, but it will keep in the fridge for 24 hours. You’ll probably want to shake it up or give it a good stir before serving.
Serving suggestions: I like topping this smoothie off with granola oats for a little crunch and aesthetic reasons!
